At our Wednesday night study, the adult group is studying the Andy Stanley series “Discovering God’s Will”. This week’s lesson focused on helping us understand guidelines for seeking God’s will through the counsel of people. We must distinguish between Godly wisdom and random opinions.
One of the exercises in this week’s lesson was to brainstorm names of people whose opinions you value enough to seek their input. We looked at five areas: Career, Money, Family Relationships, Friendships and Spiritual. Then we spent a few minutes filling in the blanks.
It was interesting to hear the names of people we go to seek Godly counsel. As I listened, I pondered why these were the people they went to?
Since I know most of those mentioned, here are some of the characteristics I see of those mentioned:
1. They are all grounded in the Word of God and are often quoting scripture.
2. They are all solid in their faith. Through good times and bad times they are praising God.
3. They are all experienced Christians. People watched them deal with their own problems. They are not ashamed to ask for prayer.
4. They publically testify how God answered their prayers.
5. They take the time to listen and care for their fellow believers.
6. They do not gossip.
Maybe someone is seeking Godly counsel from you or maybe you would like to seek Godly counsel from another Christian. What characteristics are you looking for in that person?
Proverbs 12:26 reads “26 A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.”
Be cautious from whom you seek counsel, make sure they are a righteous person.
