Pastor's Perspective, Sunday, September 25, 2011

This week as I studied God’s word, I read again the story of Abraham.  He was a relatively wealthy man who lived near Ur, which is thought today to be in southern Iraq.  In Genesis 12, God said to Abram, as he was known in those days, to pack up and go to the land that He will show him.  So Abram did as the Lord instructed.
The people of that area worshiped many gods, but what made Abram listen to this one?   One thing for sure, Abram left a life of luxury for the unknown knowing only that the Lord had called him.
God has a calling for each one of us and like Abram, sometimes it requires us to be inconvenienced from our comfort zone.  If things are going ok for us, it is natural to become complacent and not want to change.  But it takes courage to step out because many times God has a job for us outside our comfort zone.
The complacent will look at stepping out of their comfort zone and say “it can’t be done”.   God wants us to say “with God, the battle is already won”.  Or the complacent will say “let’s just stick with the status quo” but God wants us to say “grab your stuff and let’s go”.
When God calls you, how do you respond?  Are you complacent with your comfy life or are you willing to say to God “here am I”?
Our dear sister Becca is in the process of responding to God’s calling saying “here am I”.   God called her like He did with Abram to pack up and move out to another location.  She has faithfully stepped forward, selling all of her possessions and relying on God to provide the funds.  That is faith in action, not complacency.
